Milky Way — Our Home, Our Haven

Samanyolu – Evimiz, Yuvamız

“If you could leave Earth and travel through space, where would you like to go?” asked the host of the program.

Everyone looked bewildered. What kind of answer was expected? Would I be able to find the right answer and win?

Where would I want to go… where… where could I possibly go? What kind of question was this?

The host raised his eyebrows meaningfully, waiting for me to confirm that I didn’t know the answer, when I began to speak.

“Well, first of all, I’d like to take a look around our own Milky Way,” I said.

“Let’s see how things are going, whether everyone is happy where they are. I couldn’t possibly pass by the dwarf stars without stopping to say hello. They’ve grown quite old, after all, and deserve a little respect, don’t they?

“Then I should welcome the newborns and count the planets orbiting the stars. Let’s see whether the scientists have got their numbers right.

“They say there are somewhere between 100 and 400 billion stars, and that every star has at least one planet. They also claim that between 11 and 40 billion of those planets may be habitable, perhaps even harboring water…

“Well, if that’s true, we might as well start building our summer homes on those planets!”

The host, the contestants, and the audience were all staring at me, their eyes wide with astonishment.

By then, whether I won or lost no longer mattered to me.

I looked around and said:

“Go ahead, ask your questions now! Are we alone in the universe? Is there no other life besides us? Go ahead and ask—but don’t just ask. Think!”

Then I reconsidered.

“No, ask! Ask as many questions as you possibly can. Ask and think, because the truth lies in the questions we raise and the answers we discover.”

Oh… what a relief. I felt so much better.

Was that really me speaking?

I honestly don’t remember.

Etrafıma bakındım ve;“Haydi bakalım şimdi sorun, evrende yalnız mıyız, bizden başka canlı yok mu diye şimdi sorun, ama sadece sormayın, düşünün” dedim ama sonra;
